Junior Lifeguard Academies with Futuro Verde: Strengthening Ocean Safety Together

Over the past two weeks, Santa Teresa Lifeguards had the privilege of working alongside Futuro Verde School to host two Junior Lifeguard Academies, focused on strengthening ocean safety skills and drowning prevention among youth.

During the program, students participated in a combination of practical and classroom-based training designed to build confidence and awareness in and around the ocean. The academies introduced key concepts including ocean knowledge, first aid basics, CPR awareness, and introductory rescue techniques, while also highlighting the importance of prevention, teamwork, and responsibility in coastal environments.

These sessions were not only about learning new skills, but about equipping young people with the confidence and practical tools to look after themselves and others in the ocean. By building these abilities early, we continue strengthening a culture of care and preparedness that helps keep our coastlines safer.

The enthusiasm, curiosity, and dedication shown by the students throughout the two academies were truly inspiring. A big thank you to all the kids who participated and fully embraced the experience. We are also deeply grateful to the parents for trusting us with their children, and to Futuro Verde School for their collaboration and support in making this program possible.

Together, these efforts represent meaningful steps toward safer beaches and stronger coastal communities. Santa Teresa Lifeguards looks forward to continuing this work and expanding youth ocean safety programs with schools and communities along Costa Rica’s coast.
